Heat pump water heaters are becoming more popular as an energy-efficient and convenient way to heat water. EECA estimates that the latest models could save the average household up to $490 per year on its electricity bills.

How they work

Just like space heating heat pumps, heat pump water heaters work like a refrigerator in reverse. They collect heat from the air outside the house and transfer it to a refrigerant liquid, which is then pumped via closed circuit through the hot water cylinder, heating the water. (The refrigerant never comes in contact with the water supply.)

Heat pump water heaters will typically perform better than solar water heaters over the year because they are more efficient at extracting heat energy from the air, without the sun’s rays.

Why they’re good

  • Highly efficient water heating, using 1/3 the energy of a conventional electric water heater
  • Pay for themselves in 5-7 years
  • Work well in low-sunlight areas
  • Best for families that cannot change their lifestyles to maximise the benefits of a solar hot water system
  • Can be used to heat the home when connected to hydronic underfloor heating

How much will it cost?

Systems start at about $5,000.
