Hot water cylinder wrap
Installing a hot water cylinder wrap is easy and takes less than 5 minutes and is one of the most effective energy efficient measures you can take.
Adding a cylinder wrap to an older cylinder can save you 1kwh/day in energy or about $66 per year.
Gas hot water cylinders lose about three and a half times as much heat as a well insulated electric cylinder.
Read more tips »If a hot water cylinder feels warm to the touch, energy is being wasted! A cylinder wrap is a simple way to stop unnecessary heat loss from occurring.
All hot water cylinders lose energy even if no hot water is being used. The technical term is called "standing loss". Standing losses will always occur and a well insulated electric hot water cylinder may have heat losses of about 2kwh/day or $130/year.
How it works
Just like insulation for walls, ceilings and floors, hot water cylinder insulation stops or slows the passage of heat from one place to another. It keeps the heat inside the cylinder where it’s needed – so less energy is wasted.
If the hot water cylinder is ‘A-grade’, it is fairly new and probably quite well insulated. If the cylinder is marked B, C or D-grade, it was manufactured prior to 2003 and will benefit from a cylinder wrap insulation.
How it’s made
Hot water cylinder wraps are available in wool and fibreglass.
Why it’s good
- Maximises energy use
- Enhances the performance of hot water system
- Easy to install
- Inexpensive
Is it safe?
There are no health or safety risks associated with the use of hot water cylinder wraps.
How much will it cost?
A cylinder wrap costs between $60 and $100 depending on the size, and they are very simple to install. If installing on a gas cylinder it's important to ensure that adequate ventilation is maintained in accordance with the relevant standards.
