Polystyrene insulation
Polystyrene is a very effective and commonly installed form of synthetic insulation that’s moderately popular in New Zealand homes.
How it works
Polystyrene is a dense, lightweight material that is a poor conductor of heat. It’s a form of bulk insulation (like fibreglass or wool) but comes as rigid boards and loose fill instead of mats or biscuits.
How it’s made
Polystyrene is a synthetic insulation manufactured from petrochemicals. Polystyrene insulation is created either by extruding or expanding the raw materials. Some companies produce their polystyrene insulation by recycling polystyrene from other sources.
Why it’s good
- Moderate cost
- Moisture-resistant
- Good thermal insulation properties
How much will it cost?
Polystyrene insulation will cost between $20 - $22 per m2 installed.
