Wool insulation
Natural wool insulation:
Is a preferred insulation option for people with asthma and allergies.
The composition of natural wool insulation means that the maximum R-Value for a 90mm standard wall is lower than a non-natural alternative insulation.
Read more tips »Wool is a sustainable, allergen-free, natural form of insulation that provides an environmentally friendly alternative to fibreglass or polystyrene.
How it works
Wool insulation works in a similar way to fibreglass – by creating a pocket of still air around the house. For in-wall installations wool tends to be slightly less effective than fibreglass, because it has lower R-Values. However in ceilings natural insulation can be equivalent to fibreglass insulation (unless the size of the ceiling cavity is restricted).
How it’s made
Some wool insulation is 100% natural with a binding compound while other wool insulation is a blend of natural wool and fibreglass (or some other material). The use of wool blended with other materials is usually done to achieve a suitable R-Value.
Why it’s good
- All natural product
- Allergen-free
- Moderate R-Values
- Renewable and sustainable
- Naturally flame-retardant
- Reacts well to moisture
Is it safe?
Wool is extremely safe as it is a natural product. The fibres don’t irritate because they are individually too large to harm the lungs/skin.
How much will it cost?
A 100% natural wool insulation is more expensive than the equivalent in fibreglass insulation. The typical cost for a 100% natural wool insulation is:
Ceiling insulation: $20 per m2 for R3.2 installed
Wall insulation: $19 per m2 for R2.5 installed
